Using Meshtastic at crowded indoor concerts and outdoor festivals is a great way to stay off grid.
Key Strategies for Festival Mesh Networks
- Use Direct Messaging: In massive crowds, public channels will get flooded and bottlenecked. Rely on Direct Messages (DMs) using specific node numbers to ensure your texts get through.
- Keep Devices High: Pocket radios struggle through thousands of bodies. Clip your device to your backpack or a lanyard for better line-of-sight.
- Setup a Base Node outside venue and at highest elevation available (e.g. top-level parking garage with a mobile node that has a good antenna and on a portable solar power bank can run for days)
- Adjust Power Output: At crowded events, turn your transmit power down if you are close to friends. Max power can overload local receivers.
- Bring Spares: Festivals run late. Bring a small portable power bank to keep your nodes charged all weekend.
- Turn off Encryption for Testing: If you want to connect with other random festival-goers, ensure your mesh is set to the default public channel with no strict encryption.
