ABSTRACT: Austin Mesh

We have set up a number of solar-powered radio repeaters in Austin, TX. These radios communicate in the 900mhz ISM band using the LoRa protocol. These radios mesh automatically using the open-source software. Users on the network connect to these repeaters using their own “companion” radios that pair with their cell phone using bluetooth. The messages hop from radio to radio, extending the reach of the network and ensuring everyone receives every message.

AI OVERVIEW:
Overview & How It Works
- What it is: A decentralized, encrypted emergency communication network covering thousands of square miles across the greater Austin area, including Dripping Springs, Cedar Park, Leander, and San Marcos. [2, 4]
- Organization: It is not a business or a nonprofit entity, but rather a collaborative community effort supported by roughly 1,300 participants and partners like UT Austin and Austin ISD. [2, 3, 5]
- Core Technologies: The network utilizes low-power LoRa radio frequencies via two primary platforms:
- MeshCore: Focused on fixed infrastructure and reliable long-distance text messaging using dedicated solar-powered repeaters and personal companion radios.
- Meshtastic: Used for collecting sensor and telemetry data like weather tracking, though less optimal for heavy text routing compared to MeshCore. [4, 6]
Key Features & Use Cases
- Emergency Preparedness: Provides a resilient communication backbone during severe weather events or power outages that knock out local cell towers. [1, 3]
- Community & Education: Partners with local schools like the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy (LASA) through the Mesh Learning Initiative to introduce students to wireless networking and STEM concepts. [3, 5, 7]
- Communication Options: Supports direct private messages, public group channels, signal mapping, and trace routes. [4]
- On Reddit, users agree that the network offers surprisingly extensive regional coverage, though individual performance can vary depending on proximity to local repeaters and terrain. [8]
