Imagine you are playing in a huge park and want to send a secret text message to your friend on the other side. But, oh no! You don’t have a cell phone, and there is no Wi-Fi.

How do you get the message to them?

Meshtastic is like a magic game of passing notes.

How It Works

Instead of using a big cell phone tower, you and your friends get tiny, inexpensive radio devices. You connect this little radio to your phone or tablet just to type out your message.

When you hit “send,” here is what happens:

• The Shout: Your little radio shouts your text message out into the air.
• The Relay: Your friend is too far away to hear it, but another person with a Meshtastic radio is halfway in between you two. Their radio “hears” your message.
• Passing it On: That middle radio automatically copies your message and shouts it again.
• The Delivery: They keep passing it down the line—like a bucket brigade—until the message reaches your friend’s screen!

Why is it Awesome?

• No Internet Required: It works totally on its own. You don’t need a phone company, a router, or a monthly bill.
• Teamwork: Every single radio helps every other radio by passing their messages along. This is called a “mesh.” The more people who have one, the further the messages can go!
• Great for Adventures: People use it when they go camping in the deep woods, hiking up mountains, or during big storms when the power goes out, so they can still check in on each other.

Basically, it is a giant, invisible web of little walkie-talkies that send text messages by helping each other out.
