Some communities are changing their primary channel to escape public traffic or bypass the default channel’s heavy message load (like “LongFast” congestion). To make the switch, groups create a private custom channel, set it as their primary channel (Channel 0), and demote the default public channel to a secondary channel. [1, 2, 3]
Why Communities Are Changing
- Reduced Spam & Congestion: The default “LongFast” channel is often overloaded with automated GPS pings and misconfigured nodes.
- Privacy: Periodic broadcasts like location and battery status are always transmitted on the primary channel. Making a local club or emergency channel the primary one ensures this data only gets shared with trusted local radios. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
How They Make the Switch
- Create the Custom Channel: In the Meshtastic App Settings or a web client, create a new private channel (give it a specific name and Pre-Shared Key).
- Assign as Primary: Set this new custom channel to slot index 0.
- Move Public to Secondary: Add the default public channel (e.g., “LongFast”) as a secondary channel so users can still hear default, public mesh traffic.
- Export Settings: Generate a QR code or configuration URL in the app to easily share the new primary channel settings with the rest of the community.
- Adjust Location Sharing: Disable automated position sharing on the new primary channel to prevent broadcasting your GPS coordinates to all nearby radios, and turn it on for a secondary channel. [7]
