ABSTRACT: Puget Mesh

Puget Mesh is a volunteer-led community dedicated to the deployment and support of off-grid communication networks—including AREDN, MeshCore, and Meshtastic across the Puget Sound region. Our mission is to provide community-owned resilient digital infrastructure that serves as a vital tool for disaster preparedness and emergency response.

AI OVERVIEW:
- LoRa & Wi-Fi Hardware: It uses inexpensive, citizen-owned radio devices that can be battery or solar-powered.
- Ad-hoc Mesh Routing: Messages “hop” from one user’s device to another automatically to reach their destination without requiring any traditional infrastructure.
- Protocols Used: The community supports several mesh networking standards, primarily Meshtastic (for long-range text messaging via LoRa) and AREDN (high-speed data networks). [1, 2, 3, 6]
- Disaster Preparedness: Provides vital communication infrastructure when traditional cell towers go down during windstorms, earthquakes, or power outages.
- Outdoor Activities: Serves as a reliable communication platform in rural or backcountry areas (like the Cascade mountains or Puget Sound) where standard cell coverage fails.
- Privacy: Allows users to send private, encrypted messages without their data touching a corporate server. [4]
- Use Cases: Ideal for communities, hiking, biking, disaster preparedness, or secure, private communication, utilizing 915 MHz frequencies.
